Is your dog allergic to corn ?

If your dog is allergic to corn and you think that you have eliminated it from his diet, think again, because those vitamins and supplements may contain hidden sources of it !

Several inactive ingredients in over-the-counter medications may be allergy triggers for allergic dogs and cause them  continued health problems. On my Canine Allergies Solutions and Alternative K9 Nutrition groups, a number of dog owners report that although they have eliminated wheat, corn, soy and most animal proteins, their dogs still exhibit allergic reactions.  After doing considerable research on the subject, I have found articles which document the presence of corn in supplements and vitamins which may not be clearly evident .  According to research reports, corn may be used as a binder, as a coating, as a dilutant and even as a filler. In addition, it may even be used as a preservative to prevent products from spoiling ! Dog owners need to be aware that corn has a wide variety of uses and may need to contact the manufacturers in order to determine if corn is included among the ingredients of their supplements and vitamins.

Unfortunately, corn is not the only hidden allergy trigger in supplements and vitamins and dog owners may also need to ask manufacturers if BHA and BHT are being used as fillers and preservatives.  I have personally noticed that food colors are used for medications in antihistamines and feel totally annoyed at this development among pharmaceutical companies which are trying to please owners by making their products more appealing. Dog owners need to be informed of these facts and become their own detectives because this may save the lives of their dogs and enhance their quality of life !
